Major Australian bank Westpac (ASX: WBC) says it is progressively restoring payments following a disruption to normal payment operations overnight.

The bank says its customers can continue to make payments throughout the day which will be processed, however there will be some delays.

Other Westpac banking channels such as ATM, POS, online banking, telephone banking and branch banking continue to operate as normal, however some customers who were expecting payment from Westpac or to Westpac accounts last night or earlier this morning, will continue to experience some delays.

Westpac encourages customers affected, including those awaiting Centerlink payments, to contact the bank either through their nearest branch or by phoning 132 032 to enquire about the availability of temporary overdrafts or temporary increases to credit card limits.

Westpac customers will not incur any additional fees as a result of this delay. Other bank customers are encouraged to talk directly to their banks.

“We sincerely apologise to our customers and continue to focus our efforts on restoring full functionality to payment processes through the remainder of the day,” the bank said in a statement on Tuesday.

The account failure, which comes just months after a catastrophic IT meltdown crippled Westpac’s banking network, also affects the Commonwealth Bank, the National Australia Bank and ANZ.
