Love was definitely in the air when we saw them together at the Teen Choice Awards. Now, Zayn Malik and Perrie Edwards are both feeling on cloud nine, as the young couple dished out the news of their engagement on Aug. 18. Let's take a quick look at their relationship.

The two first met and became friends at "X Factor." Their friendship blossomed into a relationship after Little Mix, Perrie's band, won the competition in 2011.

The couple, Malik and Edwards, then became one of the most famous reality TV couple to have found love. However, like all other celeb couples, their relationship was not without intrigues. There were speculations that Zayn cheated on Perrie with an Australian waitress. But this has been disproved as Zayn almost immediately by proposing to the Little Mix star last week, proving once again his love for Perrie Edwards. Prior to this, Malik got a new tatoo of Perrie on his arm --- another proof of his love for the Little Mix star.

After the proposal, the couple stepped out together at the premiere of 1D‘s film "This Is Us," where the "Wings" singer wore the huge sparkly engagement ring. So now, it’s been made official.

HeatWorld.com reported that Zayn told Fabulous magazine that the distance between him and Perrie Edwards has truly made their love bond stronger than ever.

“If you don’t get to see your girlfriend 24/7, when you do get to see her you really make the most of it. Absence definitely makes the heart grow fonder.”

What did Perrie think about the huge display of affection from the 1D star?

“It must be love to be honest. When I’m away from him, I guess he can just take a look at his arm and remind him of me. So it’s a lovely compliment really. I love it, it’s lovely,” Perrie Edwards told OMG! Yahoo, reported EntertainmentWise.

Currenlty, the stars of 1D continue their global promo tour for the HIGHLY anticipated tell-all "This Is Us." The "Best Song Ever" singer told Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie on NBC's Today that he is thrilled by the happy news of engagement to Edwards.

"There's not much to say… we are engaged, really happy," Malik initially commented.

When Lauer asked Malik if they have begun planning for their wedding, Malik replied, "No plans yet."

One Direction bandmate Niall Horan made some sarcastic statement that he is pregnant just to tease Malik, adding, "That's exclusive to [the] Today show."
