Bigger isn't always better but phone manufacturers still challenge the concept of portability by adding a few inches to devices. Big screens have recently hit the market as HTC announced its update to the HTC One, One Max, which adapts the fingerprint sensor from the iPhone 5S. Sony on the other hand has unveiled its huge, 6.4 inch-screen Xperia Z Ultra while Samsung continues to rake in success with the Galaxy Note 3. Despite being equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600, it takes the HTC One Max to the back seat behind Galaxy Note 3 and Xperia Z Ultra, thanks to the Snapdragon 800. The Galaxy Note beefs up an additional gigabyte of RAM, built with 3 GB going ahead of Xperia Z Ultra and One Max's 2 GB. Both the HTC One Max and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 run the latest Android 4.2 version (Jelly Bean 4.3), while Xperia Z Ultra is stuck with Android 4.2.
The Galaxy Note 3 only has a 5.7 in. screen, built to make the most out of the awesome S Pen feature, which allows the user to scribble on his screen like an actual notebook and even draw menus to digitize the phone. Meanwhile, HTC One Max slightly ups to 5.9 in., which is still dwarfed by Sony Xperia Z Ultra 6.4 in. display.
With a high end design of a curved silver aluminum front and back, HTC One Max has its trademark BoomSound, HTC's divisive BlinkFeed and is the first Android device to use a fingerprint sensor. It is quite chunky with its 217 g weight due to its metal construction. The Galaxy Note 3 has the abovementioned S Pen and a plastic construction with faux leather at the back in black, white and pink, while the Xperia Z Ultra is water and dust proof - a more sophisticated design with its long and slim, 212 g black, white and purple device.
Sony Xperia Z Ultra has an 8 MP camera that can shoot 2 MP front facing and 1080 p videos at 30 fps. The HTC One Max has the 4 MP Ultrapixel camera technology, which can let a lot of light in for clearer images. It can shoot 2.1 MP front facing and 1080 p videos at 30 fps as well. The Galaxy Note 3 is a bit of a snapper at 13 MP and can shoot 2 MP front facing and 1080 p videos at 60 fps or 4 K video at 30 fps.
The Sony Xperia Z Ultra has a 16 GB built-in storage with a microSD card slot, while HTC One Max offers more variations with 16 GB or 32 GB with microSD card slot. The Galaxy Note 3 comes with 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB with a microSD card slot as well.
The Sony Xperia Z Ultra has a small 3050 mAh battery that can last up to 16 hours of talk time with HTC One Max having a 3300 mAh battery and the Galaxy Note 3 with a 3200 mAh, allowing for up to 21 hours of talk time.
