This year’s Cannes is breaking tradition when it allowed Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby to open at the 66th Festival de Cannes on May 15.

The opening for the prestigious film festival in France is highly coveted and it is usually reserved for films that is holding its world premiers at Cannes. The Gatsby is making its international rollout five days before the opening night at Cannes. But this has not prompted the organizers to change the line-up even if the Warner Bros insisted on its opening night in North America.

The Cannes festival opens on May 15 while Gatsby will retain the schedule earlier set by the film’s top officials.

There could be many reasons why the Cannes Festival maintained its rightful decision to have The Great Gatsby grace the prestigious opening of the Cannes Festival in France this year.

The film is based on the novel by one of the renowned literary writers of all time, F. Scott Fitzgerald. It was not entirely a surprise when the film was selected to open the highly prestigious film festival. According to ABC.net, the Gatsby by Fitzgerald is one of the “most loved novels of all time,” and there’s no denying that it just fits to open the highly prestigious Cannes.

Fitzgerald had reportedly been rumored to have completed writing the great novel while staying in the South of France with wife, Zelda Fitzgerald. This piece of information works well in the publicity for this year’s Cannes festival in terms of proximity and close association to the classic author. The Hollywood Reporter calls this as “another draw” for having Gatsby open the highly coveted Cannes’ first night.

The power cast could draw in more success for the film and the festival. Especially the festival. The Great Gatsby stars A-list stars and talented actors and actresses in the entertainment industry. These include Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke and Isla Fisher. Noting the popularity and the contribution these stars have made in the film industry, THR noted that they could draw in attention at the red carpet photoline, leading to Palais.

"All of this was prearranged," a studio executive said, according to THR. This means that everything was in place, understanding the risk Gatsby has to take in those five days before its Cannes sojourn on May 15. Should any negative review come out before the Cannes festival, it is expected to affect the film’s standing at the high profile Cannes festival. Or not.

Most of the stars in supporting role and the members of the production crew are from Australia. Speaking with Linda Mottram, the film director, Baz Luhrmann paid tribute to the full cast and crew members of the film for their contribution that ensured the production a real success.

“Is that I wanted to acknowledge and thank... It's an incredible honour to be opening the Cannes film festival...I just think it's a celebration of all the Australian cast and crew who worked on this film,” Luhrmann was quoted as saying by abc.net in an interview.

The man behind Gatsby continued, pointing out the support provided by the Australian government and its people.

"It is a testament not only to our crews and to everybody who worked on it, which is pretty much everyone in Sydney, but I think to Sydney itself as a filmmaking centre, to the government who have been really supportive of filmmaking in the country and to the state government,” Luhrman added
