Will Smith wasn't so thrilled when his family was compared to the Kardashians. The Hollywood A-lister, who is promoting his new film with son and co-star Jaden Smith, said that he is not exploiting his family for fame, which is understood to be a dig at the Kardashians.

The Kardashians is the name of the family who found fame in reality TV shows following Kim Kardashian's sex tape scandal. When Kim, the most famous of the bunch, was shamed in 2007 after her home sex video with then-boyfriend Ray J surfaced in public, her mother, Kris Jenner, arranged for the whole family to appear on the reality series "Keeping Up with the Kardashians."

The show became a hit, and had spawned several spin-offs starring the rest of the family. And while they are arguably the most famous reality TV stars in the U.S., they are constantly slammed for being attention-hungry, with critics saying Kris is exploiting her children for fame and money.

So it's just understandable that Will isn't too happy when his family is compared to the reality stars.

Along with 14-year-old Jaden to promote their new sci-fi film "After Earth," the multi-award-winning actor/musician sat down with New York Magazine's Vulture for an interview.

When the paper asked them if they see themselves treating their fame as the family business like the Kardashians, Will held up his hand, signalling his son not to speak.

"I'm trying to understand," Jaden said, to which Will replied, "Don't. You know, he's never had to, to deal with those kinds of questions."

Answering the question, "So how do you think your life is similar or un-similar to people's names in Calabasas?" Will said:

"For our family, the entire structure of our life, our home, our business relationships - the entire purpose is for everyone to be able to create in a way that makes them happy. Fame is almost an inconsequential by-product of what we're really trying to accomplish. We are trying to put great things into the world, we're trying to have fun, and we're trying to become the greatest versions of ourselves in the process of doing things we love.

"So the idea of fame or exploitation or orchestrating the media is sometimes even less desirable for us."

Jaden is rumoured to be dating 15-year-old Kylie Jenner, the youngest of the Kardashian clan. Vulture has mentioned the rumours, but Jaden didn't confirm or deny it.

Will also said that he and wife Jada Pinkett Smith are not pushing their kids into show business, saying, "I would never, ever, push somebody to have their face on a poster that's going be everywhere in the world. He is making a choice from the informed. It's less scary to me than if he wanted to be a dentist in that I couldn't help with what he'd chosen. I have relationships with some of the biggest filmmakers and actors and producers on Earth. So I can be a huge help."

Case in point, when 12-year-old daughter Willow "chose to sing and then "un-chose" it, referring to her music launch in 2010, Will said he let her be.

"She said, 'Daddy, I want to go to school with my friends during the week, and I want to hang out with them on the weekends.' At the peak of 'Whip My Hair' [Willow's hit single], she's like, 'Daddy, I'm done.' I was like, 'Wow, wow, wow. No, baby, I got Annie [the upcoming movie remake, co-produced by Jay-Z], you know. It'll be in New York, you'll be with Beyonce. You can bring your friends.'

"And she said, 'Daddy, I got a better idea. How about I just be 12?' At the end of the day, it has to be their choice."

"After Earth" is slated to hit theatres this week.
