Wimbledon Open 2013: Lleyton Hewiit, Bernard Tomic Headed For Testy Opening Round; Sam Stosur Likely To Face No.1 Favorite in Q’Finals
The Australians got a little bit unlucky with the result of Saturday's draw for the gentlemen's and ladies singles tournament at the 2013 Wimbledon Open.
Hewitt, two-time Wimbledon Champions, is set to place former top-10 player and Swiss no.2 Stanislas Wawrinka in the first round. Tomic, meanwhile, will face American veteran Sam Querrey in the opening round.
Wawrinka boasts a 2-1 career record against Hewitt, but the Australian tennis great is coming off a semifinal stint in a warm-up tournament in Queens two weeks ago. It will be interesting how Hewitt responds to the challenge after getting booted out of the tournament in the first week for two straight years at All-England Club.
Tomic, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist in 2011, played Querrey only once and that happened at the 2012 Australian Open. Tomic booked a four set victory 3-6 6-3 7-6(3) 6-3 over the American Querrey in that match, but the American veteran remains a tough opponent nonetheless.
In the women's bracket, Sam Stosur will play Anna Karolína Schmiedlová of Slovakia in the first round. Stosur's potential opponents, should she manage to progress to the third round, are pretty much winnable. However, she will face a daunting task of beating defending champion Serena Williams in the fourth round.
