Windows 8 or Android? Dell Plans to Enter the Tablet Market Again
Dell recently announced plans of entering the tablet market once again by the end of the year 2012. No exact details have been revealed but there are reports speculating that the company will enter the tablet market through the help of Windows 8 or through Google's Android.
Steve Felice, the chief commercial officer for Dell, was quoted in a statement by Reuters stating, "We have a road-map for tablets that we haven't announced yet. You'll see some announcements (in this regard) in the back half of the year." The news regarding Dell's inclination to utilize Windows 8 was based on the statement revealed by Felice stating that "We're very encouraged by the touch capability we are seeing in the beta versions of Windows 8." Windows 8 is the latest version of the operating system offered by Microsoft which would reportedly work on both PCs and Tablets.
This is not the first time Dell had tried to enter the tablet market. Dell has released two tablets in the past -- the 5-inch and 7-inch Streak tablets which received lukewarm response from consumers. Dell then decided to stop this line of tablets. If compared with the tablets released by HP and Research in Motion, Dell's tablets were more successful but it has failed to make a dent in Apple's success in the tablet market.
Dell has apparently learned its lesson as the PC maker is now taking its time to develop a tablet that could have a big impact in the tablet market. This was clearly stated in a statement made by Felice. According to Felice, "You will see us enter this market in a bigger way toward the end of the year. So we are not really deemphasizing it, we are really being very careful how we enter it. Felice also explained the company's strategy revealing that "When we introduce the products, they will be consumer products, but we are going to make sure that they are very compatible with the business marketplace, which we don't think Apple has addressed. There's lot of use in the commercial sector that requires security and more compatibility, and I think we will be able to address that in a better way."
Apple has already established its dominance in the tablet market and tablets are slowly taking the sales away from PC- a field where Dell was once dominant. Through this new tablet from Dell, the company has high hopes of being a dominant player in the tablet field as well.
