'Winds of Winter' has George R.R. Martin too busy to think about a 'Game of Thrones' prequel
George R.R. Martin is busy working on “Winds of Winter” and may not have a lot of time to work on a “Game of Thrones” prequel TV series. The author spoke about his work at the Emmys recently.
With “Game of Thrones” confirmed to end with Season 8, and very few episodes are left in each season, there has been a lot of talk about a prequel that could continue to keep the fans satisfied. The TV series is one of the most popular shows on television, and HBO may not have anything to replace it with at the moment.
Martin, who is not only a consultant but also a screen writer for the show, may be needed to guide the possible new show, in case HBO orders a prequel series based on the stories in Westeros. At the Emmy’s the author was asked about the possibility of a prequel, Independent reports.
Answering the question, Martin pointed out that he is still writing “Winds of Winter” and he will have to finish another book after that to end “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series. He, however, pointed out that there is enough material he has written that tell the tales that are before the timeline of the “Game of Thrones” TV series.
His most popular spin-off book series is the “Tales of Dunk and Egg” series that tells the stories of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and the future king Aegon V Targaryen (Egg). This book series is at the moment an ideal candidate for a prequel series.
Martin, however, is focused on finishing his books and the producers still have to finish “Game of Thrones.” Discussions about anything else, the author pointed out, is purely “speculation” at this point.
“Winds of Winter” was supposed to be released before the premiere episode of “Game of Thrones” Season 6. However, after Martin missed his self declared deadline, fans expect the book to be released in 2017. The author is yet to announce the completion of the book and its launch date.
