In the process of making comprehensive lists of the best movies from every genre, IGN has released their catalogue of the greatest in the fantasy genre.

First on the list is the classic, "The Wizard of Oz." Lauded for its creative use of color (just as the medium was a new discovery) to transition Dorothy from her drab life in Kansas to the wickedly wonderful world of Oz. With the imaginative rendering of the fantasy world that allows lions, scarecrows and tin men to come alive and join the adventure and a soundtrack that is near unforgettable even after so many years since its release, "The Wizard of Oz" remains the epitome of a perfect fantasy film.

Coming in second is the cherished fantasy romance, "The Princess Bride." Seen as a mediocre movie of its time, the movie has since collected a cult following through the watching and re-watching of subsequent generations. The story of how the stable boy, Wesley, saved Princess Buttercup from a nefarious marriage to Prince Humperdinck with the help of a giant and a swordsman has made for an eccentric and lovable masterpiece.

Rounding out the top 5 are Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," the 1963 Greek adventure "Jason and the Argonauts" and the original "King Kong" of 1933. Though these movies completely different from the first 2 on the list, the aforementioned films accomplishes the number 1 requirement of a fantasy: to completely transport each viewer into a world that is unlike reality.

Also on the list are classics that no child or adult should ever miss such as "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," "Clash of the Titans," "The Dark Crystal," "Fantasia," "Edward Scissorhands," "Beetlejuice," "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" and "The Never Ending Story." Also noted are the Harry Potter series as well as the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and a few eyebrow raising choices such as "Groundhog Day" and "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure."
