Woman Killed By Train in Auckland
A yet-to-be-identified woman was struck by a train in Auckland Thursday.
The train accident happened about 150m west of the road, along the track, and the victim died before emergency services could arrive.
Breaking news reports said the woman was struck near the Woodward Rd level crossing in Mt. Albert. Ngaire Jones, St. John's Ambulance spokeswoman, also said emergency services were called to a train crossing on Woodward Rd at 3:20pm.
The fatality was initially thought to be a child due to her built and frame, but authorities have confirmed that the victim in Auckland railway accident is a middle-aged woman.
Police said they made sure whether the victim was a child or an adult in small body frame to calm down parents, who have been calling the police station since hearing of the breaking news.
Police northern communications shift commander Matt Rogers said the train driver had given police officers his account of the accident. He also said the train passengers who witnessed the incident would receive victim support to help them recover from such a traumatic sight.
A Kiwi rail spokeswoman said the train driver would receive counseling, according to The New Zealand Herald.
"They are clearly disturbed by what they've seen,'' Rogers said, adding officers were working to identify the dead person.
"At this stage we don't have a full picture about how the person came to be struck by a train."
As of 6:30 in the evening, train services have resumed in both directions on the Western line but there were delays of between 10 and 25 minutes.
