Woman Who Verbally Abused Asian Student On Bus Charged [READ]

In June, a video posted on YouTube garnered overwhelming negative reactions from viewers. In the 3.5-minute footage, a woman is shown verbally abusing two male students on a bus. The students were standing on the aisle because they had put boxes on their seats, which angered the woman, later named to be Ms Bernobich.

She was charged by the NSW Police Force with offensive language in connection with the incident.

The 46-year-old mother from Balmain appeared in Burwood Local Court and pleaded guilty to the offense. However, Magistrate Robert Williams did not give her a conviction but put her on a six-month good behaviour bond instead.

According to court documents, Ms Bernobich was unemployed and suffering from depression and family issues. She said that she was affected by alcohol during the incident on May 2, in which she was recorded racially abusing two students of Asian descent on a bus.

She was apparently under a lot of pressure on that day, with her son also being bullied at school and her ex-partner harassing her. She had also received hate mail since the incident went online.

Ms Bernobich said that she was so ashamed of what she had done that she would go on a prime time current affairs show to apologise publicly.

“I have so much remorse over this incident [that] I have agreed to apologise on ‘A Current Affair,’” her letter reads, as reported by the Sydney Morning Herald.

“I’m so sorry,” she said outside the court.

The names of the students whom she verbally attacked were not released. It’s unclear if they or their families have complained on their behalf.
