Woman suffers infections caused by hair tie
A woman from Kentucky suffered from infections after putting a hair tie around her wrist. Doctors say that bacteria from her hair tie possibly got into her pores, which left Kopp with the infection.
According to Newser, Kopp was moving into her new home when she noticed a growing bump on her wrist. Doctors gave her antibiotics, but none helped. She went to the ER and had been told that she needed to undergo surgery.
“I didn’t believe it at first, I thought it was a spider bite or something else, not from wearing hair ties,” Kopp said. "It just kept getting bigger and redder and worse."
"She had a large abscess on the back of her wrist,” Amit Gupta, Kopp’s physician, told WLKY. “So I basically made an incision and drained the pus all the way down."
Gupta stated that that the bacteria from Kopp's hair tie likely got under her skin through her pores and hair follicles. He advises other patients to be careful not to put their hair ties around the wrist because it can cause skin problems. If these problems are serious enough and are not treated earlier, patients would most likely need amputation, and some may even die from it.
"It could have been a whole different ballgame, once it gets into your bloodstream, you know, people are known to go into a coma, your body shuts down,” Kopp claimed. “It could have been way worse."
