According to a new study, researchers have claimed that women across the world are prone to baldness and hair-thinning problems, just like men. The study has revealed that a majority of women suffer from hair thinning, wherein every third woman is becoming bald day by day due to natural hair loss problems.

The increasing trend of hair loss among women has been attributed to reasons such as overuse of heating tools and chemicals, hair extensions, specific medications, and underlying medical reasons such as thyroid and diabetes.

“Medication, underlying medical problems such as diabetes or a thyroid problem, micro-nutrient deficiencies, poor diet and even genetics can all cause the hair to thin,” said Iain Sallis, the lead research team member.

Psychologically, women are afraid to admit the problem, talk about it, and often ignore the condition. However, the repercussions could be dreadful, warns researchers.

The researchers have advised the women sufferring from hair loss problems to consult their general practitioner and dermatologists as soon as the problem is recognised. In addition, they have advised to keep away from the chemical-based products that claim to offer an effective solution for hair loss, but actually cater to a minor aspect of it.

According to nutrition expert Angela Dowden, specific deficiency of a vitamin or a mineral in the body may lead to thinning hair, since hair follicles are the last tissue in the body to receive nutrition. Therefore, it is important to get the deficient nutrient identified at first to cure the problem.

“Because hair is mostly protein, this is an important area of your diet to look at, and essential fatty acids, iron, silica, biotin and zinc are also important for growth and preventing brittle, unhealthy looking hair,” said Dowden.

One of the major causes of hair thinning in women is the deficiency of iron. Iron is known to bind and activate a protein called ferritin, which is responsible for multiplication of hair cells, Therefore, iron deficiency tend to slow down or even stop the hair growth cycle. To curb it, nutritionists suggest to include iron rich fruits and vegetables in the daily diet, including spinach, and iron-absorbing foods such as pepper and citrus fruits.
