Woolworths offer scholarships for young agriculturalist
Woolworths collaborate with universities for the third time by offering a two-week free scholarship course for young West Australian agriculturalists by September 2010.
Dubbed as "The Woolworths Agricultural Business Scholarship Program," it aids young people to boost their knowledge in their skills and lift their chances when it comes to competing in the supermarket chain.
The program is a partnership of the University of Western Sydney and the Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales.
Greg Foran, supermarket director of Woolworths, explained that the scholarship will give young agriculturists a chance to gain insights about the company and also advance themselves into the industry.
"The scholarship program is an integral part of Woolworths' Fresh Food Farming program which will see Woolworths invest around $3.25 million on sustainable farming initiatives and projects to develop the next generation of talent in rural and regional Australia," he said.
Bill Belloti, a professor of the University of Western Sydney, said that he applauds Woolsworth's initiatives for a scholarship and young people should take interest in the programs offered by the company.
"How we as a society address these food, agriculture, environment and health issues will be a key challenge in the future. I encourage applicants from all parts of the agrifood sector to consider this fantastic opportunity," the professor said.
The free scholarship program will hold a 12-day course with topics ranging from business strategy and planning, leadership skills, business finance, supply chain, management, sustainability issues, and more.
Students will also have an inside look on the operations of the supermarket chain - including tours of stores, fresh food markets and distribution centers, group work and presentations from key players within the industry, including senior Woolworths managers.
Those who are aged between 20 and 30 years old, and are employed or pursued studies in the agricultural or horticultural industry can avail of the scholarship program.
