The first Google Glass is in Australia thanks to a local consultancy firm with plans to develop workplace safety applications using the device. Google Glass continues to receive a lot of attention for a few months since some app developers get to test the device for themselves. Google is hoping to release Google Glass apps for the official market launch of the device in 2014.

Critics of the breakthrough wearable tech especially privacy advocates have already expressed their concerns about Google Glass being worn in public places.

SafetyCulture Australia gets to try out the device and see if the company can develop apps to promote safety in the workplace. Luke Anear, the managing director of the company, was the one who ordered Google Glass in 2012 when it was released for testing to developers.

SafetyCulture Australia provides technology solutions to issues concerning workplace management and safety. The company just started developing applications for the benefit of organisations wanting to increase occupational health safety standards.

Mr Anear said the arrival of Google Glass will help the company extend its existing applications to hands-free and wearable platform. The company developed and released an app in 2012 with the purpose of allowing users to perform safety inspections by using their smartphones. The application aims to increase the efficiency of checking safety standards.

Conducting safety checks using Google Glass increases productivity and efficiency because users don't have to hold a pen and clipboard as they go through with the procedure. Google Glass is also better than the smartphone because the process can be done quickly with eye and facial movement for control.

Anear also says that Google Glass can be used in hazardous workplace like on top of a roof or inside an unfinished building. Workers in similarly complicated situations can benefit from the device as well. All they have to do is take a picture or video using Google Glass hands-free.

The company believes in the opportunities presented by Google Glass to make the work environment a safer place.
