World Cup 2014: Uruguay’s Luis Suarez Bites Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini; May Get 2-Year Suspension

While Uruguay's match versus Italy on Tuesday resulted in a dramatic 1-0 victory for the South American nation, the game was eclipsed by Uruguay's Luis Suarez, who shocked the spectators when he allegedly bit Giorgio Chiellini of Italy.

TV footage of the incident showed Suarez appeared to attempt to bite Chiellini's shoulder. The incident happened just moments before Uruguay captain Diego Godin scored on the 81^st minute in the Group D battle.

Suarez has been banned two times for similar behaviour, and he faces a two-year suspension for his latest biting incident.

In 2010, he was banned by The Netherlands Football Federation for seven matches after he bit PSV Eindhoven player Otman Bakkal while playing for Ajax. In 2013, after Suarez moved to Liverpool, he bit Branislva Ivanovic of Chelsea and was banned for 10 games.

Chiellini pulled off his shirt on his left shoulder side to show the red marks on the neck. He told Italian TV, "He bit me, it's clear, I still have the mark."

He said the referee, Marco Rodriguez of Mexico, should have blown his whistle and given Suarez a red card.

But Suarez insisted that Chiellini barged him, telling Uruguayan TV, "There are things that happen on the pitch and you should not make such a big deal out of them."

Oscar Tabarez, the manager of the Uruguay team, claimed he did not see the incident and want to review the footage first before commenting on the alleged bite. He hit media for allegedly picking on Suarez.

Delia Fischer, spokeswoman of FIFA, said the body will wait for the official match report and gather all necessary elements to evaluate the incident, but FIFA Vice President Jim Boyce told BBC, "There is no doubt Luis Suarez is a fantastic footballer but once again his actions have left him open to severe criticism."

FIFA could ban players for biting up to two years.
