World Cup 2014: US vs Germany Match Proceeds Despite Rain, Floods

Despite the rains and floods, the match between the U.S. and Germany for World Cup 2014 supremacy will go on as scheduled in the city of Recife, Brazil.

Rains of more than 3 inches (76 millimeters) have fallen in Recife soaking Arena Pernambuco in the past 24 hours, according to the National Institute of Meteorology of Brazil.

Brandon Miller, CNN meteorologist, said the downpour that has fallen in six hours' time represents 25 per cent of the overall monthly average in Brazil. The tropical downpour flooded roads and created a massive transport jam leading to the Arena Pernambuco stadium for spectators out to witness the 2014 World Cup playoff between the U.S. and Germany. Cars got stalled as streets in Recife were submerged in ankle- to thigh-high waters. Cabs were also hard to come by.

CNN reported there won't be a let-up in the rains. "It's likely the rain will continue through the match and will be heavy at times."

Delia Fischer, FIFA spokeswoman, said the field remained to be in "perfect" condition that and the scheduled game would go on as planned.

Carlos Coelho, a Brazilian-born resident of Miami, told Bloomberg Recife was prone to flooding.

"Recife is very low, so when it rains all day like this there's nowhere for the water to go," he said. "The tide is very high. It's a difficult drainage problem Recife has."

But while the entire city is flooded, Coelho said he saw that the access roads and highways leading to the stadium were free of flood water.

AccuWeather.com meteorologists had forecast more rain for Recife for the weekend World Cup play.

While sunshine will bring welcome drying on Friday, tropical moisture streaming in from the Atlantic Ocean will trigger more showers around Recife this weekend, Kristina Pydynowski, Senior Meteorologist, said.

Rob Miller, meteorologist from AccuWeather.com, said Sunday's showers could unleash downpours with tropical moisture in place.
