World Turtle Day 2016: Bindi Irwin introduces friend turtle, raises awareness on threats they face
May 23 marked the World Turtle Day, and Australian TV personality and wildlife warrior Bindi Irwin took to social media to share her part in the celebration.
On her Instagram account, the 17-year-old winner of “Dancing With The Stars” Season 21 posted a photo of a little loggerhead turtle, which is being taken care at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. “This little sweetheart is Bob,” she wrote. “You may be thinking, 'Bindi, how can one tiny loggerhead turtle be this adorable?' Well. It's true. He is just this cute.”
Steve Irwin’s famous daughter also shared that Bob was found right after hatching, completely exhausted fighting against the vast ocean wave breaks. “He was trying to swim out to sea to get to his brothers and sisters, who were stronger than him.”
World Turtle Day is an annual celebration which began in 2000. Spearheaded by the American Tortoise Rescue, it seeks to generate awareness on all the kinds and species of turtles and tortoises. The event also hopes to encourage human action to help the turtles survive and thrive.
A global event, World Turtle Day is celebrated by a number of countries in various ways. This includes saving turtles caught in different locations, dressing up the animals and releasing a group of turtles to their natural habitat.
Bindi tagged the Wildlife Warriors Worldwide Instagram page, which also posted an image of loggerhead turtles. The organisation captioned the photo, “This #WorldTurtleDay we are bringing awareness to all species of #turtles who face many natural and human caused threats. These day old #loggerhead turtles were caught up in marine debris on their epic journey to the sea.” It also revealed that only one in 1,000 hatchlings will survive to adulthood. “[W]ith the help from our amazing team at the #WildlifeHospital, we hope to see better odds for these tiny turtles!”
