Canon announced the release of the world’s first full-frame 35mm sensor digital cameras with 50MP resolution – 5DS and 5DS R. Prior to these models, the highest resolution for Canon cameras was 20MP. The company has gone a step further and introduced 50.6 megapixel cameras with and Dual DIGIC 6 Image Processors, which provide a very high image quality with super fast processing speed. Both cameras have similar features and specifications, according to the company's press release.

Auto Focus (AF) System

The cameras not only have a high resolution of 50.6 mega pixel but a highly precise autofocus as well. The cameras come with a 61-Point High Density Reticular AF array including up to 41 cross-type AF points and EOS iTR AF. It also has the EOS Scene Detection system featuring a 150,000-pixel RGB+IR 252-zone metering sensor that gives more performance and precision.

Stability

The EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R were in built in a manner that would give the best output to the user in terms of image quality and functionality. The design is such to ensure minimum shakes and more stability while shooting, which Canon acomplished via a reinforced chassis, baseplate and tripod lug to improve rigidity.

Arbitrary Release Time Lag Setting

For camera shakes due to the mirror bounce, the mirror vibration control system in the camera models are redesigned. Apart from the normal model, Canon added an Arbitrary Release Time Lag Setting in the Mirror Lock Mode. This is a new feature included in the two models. This setting gives the user new intervals of 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, one and two seconds. By choosing one of these, the user gives the camera a certain amount of time for the vibration to dissipate before the image is clicked or the shutter is released.

Fine Detail

Fine Detail is a new Picture Style included, which has three settings: Strength, Fineness and Threshold. These settings increase the sharpness of movies or images taken from the camera.

New Auto White Balance Setting

Both cameras have an advanced AE system and a new Auto White Balance setting, which includes Ambience Priority and White Priority. This helps when shooting under tungsten light.

Intelligent Viewfinder II

Both models feature Intelligent Viewfinder II, which provides 100 percent field of view. It is also able to “display cropped shooting frames and superimpose a customizable selection of camera settings and data such as dual-mode electronic level display and grid, as well as exposure, white balance, metering, drive, image quality and AF modes.”

The cameras have several other features such as dual card slots for CF and SD memory cards, creative time lapse functions for movie recording and a shutter durability rating up to 150,000 cycles. The difference between 5DS and 5DS R is that the latter cancels the Low Pass Filter as it reduces the quality at the pixel level. The cameras will be available starting June 2015. For the body alone, the EOS 5DS is estimated to cost $3,699.00 while the EOS 5DS R could be bought at roughly $3,899.00.
