Severely-ill Valery Spridonov is firm about his decision to undergo the world's first head transplant surgery in 2017. However, the Russian Orthodox Church has warned that by doing so, he will be going against the will of God.

According to the Orthodox Church leaders, the operation would result in placement of Spridonov's on a body that already had a soul, reports The Mirror. But Spridonov argues that being a non-religious man, the criticism and reasoning provided by the leaders will not impact his decision.

The 30-year-old Russian computer scientist from the western Russian city of Vladimir is suffering from Werdnig-Hoffman muscle-wasting disease, a rare genetic disorder which was diagnosed when he was one year old. The church's verdict came soon after it was announced that the transplantation will be carried out by the Italian surgeon Dr Sergio Canavero, reports The Mirror.

Many medical experts think that the surgery is medically feasible, a few consider the head anastomosis venture, or HEAVEN, procedure as a “pure fantasy” and impractical. Canavero is even being compared to the fictional character Dr Frankenstein. Even though HEAVEN still does not have enough funds, Canavero has full faith that the project will be successful.

The IT professional confessed how he terrified he is about the operation, however, at the same time, he is ready to take the risk and sacrifice his life for science. Spridonov hopes that out of the entire surgery, enough would be learned which will help surgeons carry out future full body transplantation operations.
