WWE, Alberto del Rio Agree To Terms, Mexican Fighter Free To Pursue Wrestling Career [VIDEO]
The World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and former talent Alberto del Rio have reached terms allowing the Mexican fighter to pursue his wrestling career outside of the WWE stable. Del Rio was abiding by the non-compete clause in his contract since he parted ways with company last August.
Del Rio found creative means to be still involved with wrestling as he took on a non-wrestling role at Mexico's AAA promotion at TripleMania XXII following his release. The legal battle with the company has come to a halt after both sides agreed to terms, which were not disclosed to the public.
"Following his departure from WWE, former WWE Superstar Alberto Del Rio and WWE have reached a mutual understanding with regard to his future booking opportunities. WWE wishes Alberto the best in his future endeavors," the WWE said in its official statement as per Wrestling Inc.
The Mexican fighter was supposed to inherit the mantle of Rey Mysterio who also had a falling out with Vince McMahon and company. Del Rio relayed during an interview with Wrestle TV, that the outfit will have a hard time replacing the Mexican legend as he admits he just comes second, with his wife even proclaiming Mysterio a god and his husband the devil. Mysterio is another case of an unhappy WWE employee who planned to let his contract run out but an injury clause in the terms paved the way for the WWE to extend his contract.
The release of del Rio opens up his opportunities to continue his wrestling career with other outfits. While he became the WWE's first Mexican born champion, his success and fandom was abrupt as many fans believed he had a shortcut to the top of the totem pole. Now, he will continue his work with Lucha Undergorund, a wrestling outfit that is very popular in his home country. He has had previous dealings with the outfit and aided in the selling out of an event recently in Laredo, Mexico.
The settlement between WWE and del Rio are under sheets but reports say that the Mexican fighter has agreed to no longer pursue a case against the renowned wrestling company and refrain from making any negative comments regarding his former employer. Del Rio made headlines in the past months after accusing the outfit of racism which were also supported by some former talents.
