WWE Tried To Pry Away Chael Sonnen From UFC With $5M Offer
It has been a roller coaster year for former UFC middle weight and lightweight contender Chael Sonnen. First he was placed on a two-year suspension for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Then, his mother companies UFC and Fox cut ties with him both as a player and a colour commentator. These circumstances make it hard to believe that the brawler turned down $5 million given his current state.
The retired UFC news once again after he declared in his podcast, "You're Welcome" that the World Wrestling Entertainment tried to pry him away from the Ultimate Fighting Championship for a hefty price tag of $5 million. What was more surprising was that he turned down the lucrative offer from Vince McMahon.
"I was offered $5 million [WWE head] Vince McMahon...Now, I was still under contract with the UFC and I never took this to Dana. I handled it on my own. I told them 'No' and that was the end of that," Sonnen declared in his podcast.
Sonnen went on as saying that it was Vince McMahon himself who came to him with the offer. His microphone skills, which are sometimes more prolific than this mixed martial arts game, may lead some credence to this declaration. WWE has not yet commented on the said issue yet it has some history of interest in Sonnen. The fighter also said that the day after he was handed the suspension, a supposed WWE executive called him up to just tell him off that they were not interested in his services, leaving Sonnen wondering on the credibility of the caller and the point of the contact.
Ploy of not by rival outfit TNA to turn off Sonnen from joining the WWE, it is still unclear why up to know there is dead air with regards to his career in professional wrestling. After all, the WWE is bereft with top talent with recent injuries and contract disputes with its stars. For now, it would be beneficial if Vince McMahon confirms or denies this story as it would add intrigue not only for Sonnen but to the wrestling world as well.
