Wyclef Jean withdraws bid for Haitian presidency
Wyclef Jean withdrew his candidacy for the presidency of Haiti. In a statement, the 40-year old Wyclef said that his withdrawal from the Haitian presidential race was "thoughtfully made" and "was not an easy conclusion to reach."
"After weeks of quiet but painstaking reflection with my wife and daughter, I have chosen to end my bid for the presidency of Haiti," Wyclef said.
"This was not an easy conclusion to reach; but it is one that was thoughtfully made, taking into account many, many competing factors and weighing the course that will best advance the healing of the country and help it find the quickest path to recovery."
The singer said that his candidacy for the presidency of Haiti can be used "to improve conditions for our Haitian brothers and sisters."
Jean filed his candidacy in the 2010 Haitian presidential election on August 05, 2010. But the Electoral Commission ruled the musician ineligible to stand as Wyclef had not met the requirement the 5-year residency clause. Wyclef Jean enjoys popularity in Haiti where majority of the population is under 21 years old.
