‘The X Factor Australia’ 4th Elimination Recap: Danni Minogue’s XOX Voted Out [VIDEOS]
After two weeks in the bottom two, Dannii Minogue’s girl group XOX has been kicked out of “The X Factor Australia” on Monday night.
It has not been a smooth ride for the girls – Tahni Christini (19), Chaska Halliday (17), Nada-Leigh Nasser (21) and Serenity (18). They came as solo artists, but ended up as a group during boot camp when the judges thought their individual strengths are best utilised in a girl band.
They have been in the bottom two in Week 2 along another newly formed group Younger than Yesterday. Fortunately for them, the judges opted to save them.
However on Monday, they weren’t able to depend on the judges anymore when they were thrust in the bottom two along with Tee. Dannii backed them up and voted off Tee, but the rest of the judges – Ronan Keating, Redfoo and Tee’s mentor Natalie Bassingthwaighte – all voted the girls off.
Natalie’s reason was obvious: she’s Tee’s mentor. Redfoo and Ronan, however, did not give specific reason why they chose Tee over XOX. It might have something to do with their recent performances. Although they were “back in the show” on Sunday night after they sang Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea’s “Problem,” XOX girls have had rough previous weeks.
Also, the three judges just couldn’t figure out what Tee was doing in the bottom two. They felt that Tee is a very talented singer (aren’t they all?) and shouldn’t be in that category at all. It’s just unfortunate that the voting public didn’t seem to think similarly. So although Tee is undoubtedly not lacking in talent, that didn’t reflect in the votes.
XOX tried to win the judges over, though, singing “Suit & Tie” by Justin Timberlake during the sing-off with Tee, who went for “When a Man Loves a Woman.” In the end, it was still Tee they chose over them.
Dannii couldn’t contain her frustration over the result. She has lost the hip-hop girl group Trill in the first week, Younger than Yesterday in the second, and now XOX, and the show is just in its fourth week. If not for her winning wildcard Brothers 3, she would be left with no one to mentor anymore.
“I feel like on one hand you had to really take a lot of criticism,” the 42-year-old ARIA Awards nominee told her girls, taking aim at her fellow judges for how they panned XOX. “Other acts have faltered but not have had the same criticism. I really feel strongly about that.”
She continued, “I just learnt this week in fact that you had 45 minutes to learn the routine. So yeah, when you’re sitting on stage playing the guitar singing or just standing on one spot, that’s very different from four people moving, trying not to crash into each other. Well done.
Before the bottom two were announced, Redfoo premiered his “New Thang” live on the show. It’s not hard to see why this LMFAO singer had number one international hits; he was able to command the entire audience with his new song. People were screaming and dancing to the still unfamiliar tune.
British songstress Paloma Faith also performed her chart-topping single (and presenter Luke Jacobz’s favourite song at the moment) “Only Love Can Hurt Like This” live on stage. Although her number was so unlike Foo’s lively disco production, the 32-year-old pop-soul singer still captivated the audience with her hauntingly beautiful song.
