‘The X Factor Australia’ Grand Final Sing-Off: Marlisa Punzalan, Dean Ray and Brothers 3 [VIDEOS]
“The X Factor Australia” grand final has begun on Sunday. Brothers 3, Dean Ray and Marlisa Punzalan all gave their best to court viewers of their votes, desperate vying to be named the winner of the 2014 series.
Marlisa Punzalan Audition Song – “Yesterday”
She was just a shy 14-year-old in wacky pants when she entered the X Factor stage for the first time. She wowed the judges and the audience with her haunting version of the Beatles classic “Yesterday,” making her soon-to-be mentor Ronan Keating howl with delight. Months later, she repeated the same goosebump-raising performance for the grand final, making Ronan teary-eyed.
“Whoa! Wow! What a way to kick off the 2014 grand final, baby! That was incredible,” Redfoo told the young singer. “You have just got up to the peak right there. That was perfect.”
“You have been such an incredible person in this journey. And as a mentor, I couldn’t have asked for a better contestant. I have loved every moment,” Marlisa’s mentor looked every bit as a proud father that moment.
Brothers 3 Duet with Guy Sebastian – “Like a Drum”
The brothers from Mudgee had their mentor Dannii Minogue chase sheep on their farm during their homecoming. On stage, Makirum, Shardyn and Tayzin had help from the first ever “Australian Idol” winner and former “X Factor” judge Guy Sebastian in singing his hit song “Like a Drum.” As announced earlier, the winner of the show will be accompanying Guy as support in his arena concert tour. It’s still yet to be determined if that job would go to Brothers 3.
“That would be amazing. This guy is a lunatic like us,” Tayzin said after host Luke Jacobs asked how they would feel if they won the title and went on tour with Guy.
“In a good way!” he hastily added.
Dean Ray Winner’s Single “Coming Back”
Dean’s winner’s single took advantage of his guitar skills and rock ‘n roll flair. As his mentor Natalie Bassingthwaighte boasted, Dean was born to sing on stage and in a studio.
“When I grow up, I wanna be as cool as you,” Ronan, 37, quipped to the 22-year-old finalist.
“You’re just a world class act. You know who you are, you stick to it. You’re edgy, you’re stubborn, and you’re rock n’ roll, man. It’s awesome to see. I hope that you win,” Redfoo unapologetically said, making known to all who his favourite is among the top 3.

Brothers 3 Audition Song – “Safe and Sound”
When the brothers sang on the X Factor stage for the first time some two months ago, they had all four judges standing up to applaud their performance. They almost did not make it to the Top 12, but thanks to viewers’ votes, they got in as the Wildcard. Their popularity with the voting viewers just got stronger each week, never tasting what it felt like to be in the bottom 2. Unfortunately, the judges, save for their mentor Dannii, have been having shifting opinions of them.
They rarely get standing ovation from the judges these days, and Dannii was the only one standing at the end of their performance now. Ronan, Redfoo and Natalie have not given them constructive criticism after singing their audition song “Safe and Sound,” but they have also limited positive things to say about them, just that they’re good people and they made the show fun with their goofy attitude.
Marlisa Winner’s Single – “Stand by You”
Even though Redfoo has firmly set his heart on Dean being the winner, the U.S. chart-topper was still in awe of Marlisa’s winner’s debut single performance.
“I think you got yourself a hit there ... Now all you have to do is win this thing!” Redfoo told the 15-year-old schoolgirl. By his own words, though, Redfoo wanted someone else to win “this thing.”
“If this is my last year on the show, I hope I can leave with a worthy winner like you,” Ronan said, which begs the question, is he leaving after this season?
Dean Ray Duet with Olly Murs – “Dear Darlin’”
Rock n’ rolling crooner Dean Ray is actually a country boy. After taking Natalie to his hometown of Meandarra, a very small town in Queensland, he went back to the X Factor Australia stage to sing a duet with “X Factor UK” runner-up Olly Murs. As he is wont to do, Dean added his own flavour to Olly’s ballad “Dear Darlin’.”
Brothers 3 Winner’s Single – “The Lucky Ones”
The siblings’ winner’s debut single has the clicking and tapping beats that the boys usually sing. And for the first time in a long while, the brothers have finally made all the judges stand up after their performance.
“You boys make me laugh ... Keeping it until the grand finals,” Ronan said, barely able to say the words in between laughs. “What an aptly named song for you, guys, ‘The Lucky Ones.’ But you know what, I love you, guys. Welcome to the grand finals.”
Redfoo acknowledged that the boys have a hit song with their single as well.
“Your personality is great, and you guys are nice dudes. But you got a hit song as well. Marlisa has a hit song. And this is a hit. And Dean. Everybody’s got a hit song,” he added when Natalie threw in her act’s name.
“The country vibe or that twang is in right now. I’m loving it. I gotta hear this song on the radio. This is so tough because I wanna hear everybody’s song. But I became a greater fan of you guys right now. This song is incredible.”
Marlisa Duet with Jessica Mauboy – “Never Be The Same”
Jessica Mauboy was just a couple of years older than Marlisa when she was put in a similar position. She was the runner-up in the fourth season of “Australian Idol” in 2006, losing to Damien Leith. She was also one of the strongest voices in the show then, just as Marlisa is this “X Factor” season. So perhaps their duet was a foreshadowing of Marlisa’s fate on Monday?
“You are doing such an incredible job. Make sure just be you. And sing your heart out ... Reminding yourself why you’re actually there. And keep your family close,” Jess gave Marlisa words of advice.
Dean Ray Audition Song – “Bette Davis Eyes”
Singing his audition song “Bette Davis Eyes” in a faster tempo than his first try months ago, Dean once again commanded standing ovation from the judges.
“You never ever let us down, ever. You’ve been exceptional,” Ronan told Dean.
“It was the best audition I’ve seen in my life,” Redfoo agreed, recounting the first time Dean took the stage and sang the same song.
He added, “That’s what I like about you. Just like me, you’re chilling like a cheetah,” referring to their similar cheetah suits.
And when Natalie told Dean that he’s the “definition of a star,” Redfoo nodded his head, agreeing that the contestant should win the season.
“I wanna remind people at home that here, we’re looking for the X Factor. And when we look at the X Factor in the dictionary, it says Dean Ray, I guarantee you,” Natalie was convincing viewers to vote for him.
Guy Sebastian, Olly Murs, Jessica Mauboy and Taylor Swift
On Monday, the winner of “The X Factor Australia” will be announced, but before that, Sunday’s special guests will be taking the stage once more. Also, U.S. country pop superstar Taylor Swift will be visiting the show.
