“The X Factor Australia” contestants took on the Judges’ Challenge on Sunday, and things went a little crazy for some.

In Judges’ Challenge, the Top 7 acts were given songs chosen by the judges – Ronan Keating, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Dannii Minogue and Redfoo – who are not their mentors.

Brothers 3

The first to take the challenge were the Brothers 3, whose song choice “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers was from Ronan. The quirky farm boys began singing the song from backstage before ending up on stage.

Ronan and Foo, who were handed an Irish hat and a boa by the brothers as they walked pass them, were totally enamoured by the performance; however, Natalie just couldn’t really see the point.

“It was too jokey for me,” she said.

Marlisa Punzalan

Marlisa’s song for the night, “Try” by Pink, was chosen by Redfoo. Natalie loved it, but it appeared that she passed the cranky pants title to Dannii for Marlisa’s performance.

“You had me at the end of the song; you didn’t have me at the beginning. I’m sorry,” Dannii told the 14-year-old after complimenting her voice and her delivery.

Reigan Derry

Natalie picked “Dog Days Are Over” by Florence and the Machine” for Reigan. The 25-year-old former member of Scarlett Belle earned four standing ovations from the judges after delivering her flawless performance. As Ronan generously said, it was one of the best vocals he has heard in the X Factor ever.

“That was stellar, your vocals, it’s chilling,” Natalie praised Reigan.

Tee

Ofisa Toleafoa hadn’t had his usual stellar performance last week, but he meant to come back this week. However, he had been having a hard time getting his performance right, making Ronan doubt that he could pull through during the live show. Ronan chose the song “When Doves Cry” by Prince for Tee.

Ronan stood up at the end of his performance, though, which meant it was a good sign that he had done well. Dannii had a few praises and constructive criticisms for Tee. She wanted him to look the audience in the eyes to connect with them because that’s what she said missing from his performances.

“I just felt something was weird in the beginning. But at that end, it was when it came alive,” Redfoo added, agreeing with Dannii on her assessment that the start of the song should have been delivered differently.

Caitlyn Shadbolt

Caitlyn and her mentor Ronan weren’t happy with Natalie’s song choice for the 18-year-old country bumpkin, “Still Into You” by Paramore. After surviving Bottom 2 last week, Caitlyn had to ante up her performance.

Although Redfoo and Natalie loved it, Dannii just had something to add.

“The top notes were really screaming, not in tune like they were earlier today,” Dannii said.

Dean Ray

Last week’s theme was Dean’s genre, rock. It was an easy week for him as it was right up his alley. For Judges’ Challenge, however, Dean got disco-loving Redfoo, who chose the dance track “Stolen Dance” by Milky Chance.

But as Dean has previously proved, he can do any genre. During the home visit, he sang “Dancing Queen,” giving it his own flavour to the classic disco song. That’s also what he did with “Stolen Dance,” making it an intimate number with a few audience surrounding him.

“That was perfect,” Dannii said of Dean’s performance.

Jason Heerah

Singing Dannii’s song choice for him, “Latch” by Disclosure, Jason dedicated his performance to his wife.

“You are amazing,” Ronan stuttered a bit in describing Jason.

“That wasn’t amazing,” Natalie contradicted, “That was phenomenal!”

All the judges agreed. As Dannii added, “That was one of the best performances in the whole series.”

The live decided will be aired on Tuesday instead of Monday. And for the first time and only for the week, it’s going to be a Bottom 3.
