X-Factor Australia' winner Cyrus Villanueva overtakes Adele, debut song 'Stone' tips 'Hello' in iTunes chart
Cyrus Villanueva’s debut single, “Stone,” reached a remarkable milestone on Wednesday, Nov. 25, when it took the top spot from Adele in Australia’s iTunes listing.
In the Nov. 25 iTunes chart for Australia, the newly crowned “X-Factor Australia” winner’s single. “Stone.” landed at number one. The top spot was previously held by Adele with her hit song “Hello.”
Villanueva’s first single was only released on Tuesday night, Nov. 24, after the 19-year-old singer won this year’s “X-Factor Australia.” The song debuted at number two on Australia’s iTunes chart during its launch, overtaking hits such as Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself” and “Sorry.”
The Filipino-Australian singer was ecstatic when he learned about it and shared during his interview with PopSugar that he “nearly screamed” when his brother sent him a screenshot about it. Villanueva, who has been very humble all throughout his “X-Factor Australia” journey, admitted that he was surprised that “Stone” already reached the number one spot.
When PopSugar asked if he expected it, Villanueva replied “definitely not” and stated that he still “can’t believe” that it happened.
“I had a number one on iTunes with Chris' (Isaak) ‘Wicked Game’ and to now go and have my own single reach number one,” he explained. “I'm so grateful that the people who enjoy my music have supported me.”
He also shared the sentiment to All Access Areas (AAA) where he mentioned that found it "ridiculous” that his debut single already topped the iTunes chart, Yahoo 7 TV reports. Villanueva even joked that he has “taken so many screenshots” to capture the milestone and to prove to himself that it did happen.
“It is crazy that overnight it has gone to No. 1, I am so grateful,” he added. “And that song especially, I absolutely love 'Hello' — I have it on replay. (Adele is) such an amazing artist so to see my name up with her and Justin Bieber in the charts, it’s incredible.”
Villanueva is currently working on his self-titled album which is set for release on Dec. 11.
