Channing Tatum has been confirmed to play Gambit in the new "X-Men: Apocalypse" in 2016 however Channing wants Gambit to debut in a standalone movie first and Twitter fans reacted.

Channing Tatum has made it no secret that he'd love to play Gambit in the "X-Men" movies. He has been very vocal about wanting to play Gambit for a very long time. Now that it has been confirmed that he will take the role, Tatum has other plans for his character aside from appearing in the next "X-Men: Apocalypse." Slashfilm reports that Channing Tatum would love for Gambit to have a standalone movie, as an introduction for his "X-Men: Apocalypse" comeback.

"We've talked about it being a standalone, first, and actually trying to change the 'hero, superhero movie' because Gambit is not your typical hero. He's a thief. He walks on the gray. I'm hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones," Tatum said in an interview with MTV News.

In another interview with Wegotthiscovered, Channing Tatum said that the Gambit standalone movie will be before "X-Men: Apocalypse."

"It would be an honor to get to do it. Marvel is such an amazing, huge machine. Just to get to embody the character would be an honor. We're going to try and change it up a little bit and do something slightly different than what your normal superhero movie is. So we'll see if it works," he added.

However, Channing Tatum also acknowledges the fact that having a standalone movie for Gambit is easier said than done.

"The machine of the Marvel world is so ginormous that it's literally like climbing a mountain, getting one of these movies made, and all of the pieces that go along with it," he added.

When reports spread online that Channing Tatum may be debuting Gambit in a standalone movie, fans took to Twitter to express their thoughts.

@XMenFilms I still want to punch him in the face. But a gambit solo movie actually makes more sense. He has a really interesting story. — Ana (@Jet__Girl) June 7, 2014

I love Gambit as much as the next guy who grew up with the #XMen animated series but I'm not sure he needs a solo movie. #IllStillSeeIt

So far Gambit has only been seen on screen briefly in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." However, when Bryan Singer announced that he would bring back Gambit in "X-Men: Apocalypse," "X-Men" producer Lauren Shuler Donner has gone on the record (video below) that Channing Tatum is her man to play Gambit. It's only a matter of making things official. It's also been reported that Channing Tatum has already met with Donner to discuss the role and that he is already working on an accent for his Gambit character, probably in preparation for his standalone movie.

As for Donner's reason why she wants Channing Tatum to play Gambit, she said that aside from his great skills in action movies, Tatum has a good heart and comes from New Orleans. She added that Gambit loves New Orleans so Channing Tatum can relate to that.
