“Xena: The Warrior Princess” will be returning to television soon. Producers are reportedly looking for a writer for the reboot.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that “Xena: Warrior Princess” first aired on television as a spinoff of “Hercules.” Sources said that NBC and NBC Universal International are looking for a writer and that the reboot will still be created and produced by Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi, the original executive producers of the series.

Lucy Lawless starred as Xena in the action adventure drama series. Insiders said that Lawless will play roles behind the scenes as well as onscreen, although there will most likely be a new actress to take on the role of the warrior princess. Producers are planning to launch “Xena: The Warrior Princess” in 2016. It is still uncertain how many episodes the first season will consist of.

Sources also told Hollywood Reporter that the lead character, Xena, will have the charm and charisma of Lawless and the wit of Katniss Everdeen of “The Hunger Games”. Producers are allegedly searching for a smart and sophisticated female superhero that will match the current times.

The original “Xena” was created by John Schulian and Tapert, Lawless’ husband. It was also produced by Tapert, Raimi, Renaissance Pictures, Studios USA and Universal Television. The show became a huge hit, having been distributed to over 108 countries worldwide. The original show ran for six seasons. During Comic-Con, Lawless told HitFix that “Xena” has to make a return.

“I’ve been pitching that show because there’s a swell of interest still. I’m always being peppered with questions [about] when “Xena” movie is coming. Guy’s, I’m pitching my ass off to make it happen, whether it’s with me or not. I think it’d be funny to have a reboot like “Ash vs. Evil Dead” – like middle-aged Xena in a muumuu with a bad attitude and a smoking habit. Bring [actor] Ted Raimi [who played Joxer] in [and maybe] Bruce Campbell,” said Lawless who openly shared how much she wanted to take on the role of Xena again. The character died in the series finale.
