Yep, Racism Still Lurks in Australia; Police Charge Australian Woman for Racist Train Rant (VIDEO)
An Australian woman has been slapped with charges of offensive language after she racially abused passengers on a train, caught on video, posted online and ultimately went viral.
The woman, identified as 55-year-old Karen Bailey, targeted her racist rant against young children and an Asian woman during a Sydney train journey.
Kareem Abdul, who posted the three-and-a-half minute video, described the incident on YouTube. "I started filming as the woman became aggressive toward some children (ages 12 & under) who refused to vacate their seats when she had demanded. This video begins just after she had started screaming expletives into the face of the upset kids and the mother of the children got up to stand in between the lady and her kids. The lady then assaulted the mother and a young dude who gave up his seat for her and now the lady is calling the police .... Because the kids didn't move?"
The video showed Bailey mocking the language and facial features of the other passenger on a Sydney to Newcastle train.
"Look at this bogan here," she said. Bogan is an Australian slang term similar to "white trash."
"He can only get a gook, he can't even get a regular girlfriend. It's so sad."
"Gook" is a derogatory term used by American soldiers in the Vietnam war.
She then turns on the woman and says: "What's wrong with Hong Kong? Why did you come to Australia?"
Police had been alerted of the fuss on the train so that when Bailey got off, she was immediately approached by the authorities. She was later arrested and issued a summons citing offensive language.
Offensive behaviour is fined $500 in Australia.
