Ylvis Brothers of 'What Does the Fox Say?' Talks about Unexpected Success of the Viral Video
"What Does the Fox Say?" was first published on Sept. 3. The video creators did not expect it was going to be a hit. It has by now received more than 125,000,000 views and still counting. The makers of the video, Ylvis Brothers have unveiled the truth from the time when they made this viral video.
Talking to the "Entertainment Weekly" they have revealed that the song was meant to be a prank and nothing else. They did not create the song to become a super-duper hit. It is an unexpected success of the viral video that has surprised the duo.
The Ylvis brothers, Vegard and Bard Ylvisaker are the hosts of a late night Norwegian comedic show "Tonight with Ylvis." They revealed that the song was just a joke that was to be featured on their talk show. But in no time, the song became a viral sensation and has hit the spot. The video hit made the comedian brothers popular worldwide. The creative duo even surpassed other more known personalities in page views.
They revealed they contacted a Norwegian Production company, Stargate, for the promotional act of the new season of their show. It was a favor that they sought in return of a favor that Ylvis brothers had provided to a Stargate person, by preparing a birthday gift.
According to them they had planned the song in a way that it would fail and their introduction was something like this, 'We're sorry, we screwed up, this was all we could do," said Vegard. He confessed that they wanted to misuse the talents of the producers at the Stargate.
According to the Ylvis Brothers "What does the Fox say?' became their idea only out of genuine curiosity about what kinds of sounds are made by a fox. They decided to pick fox over other mammals that they had in mind simply thinking that it would be fun.
Recently, the brothers visited "Today" to perform their viral video hit "What does the Fox say?"
"This last month has been just ridiculous," they said on the show. They also joked with the hosts that their thought behind making the song was to perform on "Today" TV show.
"This was our plan. This is the main goal. We were sitting back home in Norway, thinking if we were going to perform this on Today show, how were we going to do it? So then we made the song about the fox," said Ylvis brothers.
For their next song they have invited suggestions and some people have suggested wolf and giraffe.
Over a few drinks with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb the boys disclosed that while growing up in Africa they were quite isolated. Back then, they watched a lot of "Monty Python" and "Life of Brian" which help in shaping them up. And they turned to comedy because they lacked friends at that time.
"What Does the Fox Say?" Makers Ylvis Brothers also performed at Jimmy Fallon's show.
