Venus Williams of the U.S. after her victory over Flipkens of Belgium at the U.S. Open tennis championships in New York

Venus Williams was back with her old self as she turns down semi-finalist Kirsten Flipkens with a big thump and reaches out for U.S. Open's round two.

The year has certainly been a challenging one for the American who wore a multicolored dress with accents of purple weave on her hair. The year 2013 was packed with injuries and her treatment for Sjogren's syndrome.

Despite it all, the 33-year-old athlete's incomparable positivity is what made her outpower her Belgian opponent at 6-1, 6-2 during the first round of competition. The match certainly did not progress easy to its results as Flipkens competed hard enough to win, and yet, it still turned out resounding. Williams took it all home as if she was once again the player who takes down 12th seeds without spending too much energy on it.

On Her Comeback

The tennis player herself admitted how she transformed for the better since the time she announced that she is diagnosed with an "auto-immune disease." She may have been one of the seniors on the said 2013 US Open Tour, but her passion for the sport has certainly not grown old and weak.

"I think I was serving in the 40 percentages all my matches this summer, so it was very challenging. You can only go up," Williams added.

She emphasised too during her recent interviews that one of the things that sustains her positive outlook in life is the knowledge that she knows she can still play great tennis.

More to Come for Venus Williams

Even if Williams is ranked at the 60th spot and considered not as sharp as she used to be when she was younger, her 2013 U.S. Open first round record is now at 15-0. Her sister, Serena Williams, also a top ranked tennis player, has flown high with her opening round figures at 6-0, 6-1 during the first match with Arthur Ashe Stadium.

All of the Williams' sisters fans, especially of Venus, can surely expect a lot of good things to come for this year's prestigious tennis tournament. She's set to make big tennis moments just like the good old times.
