Young Refugees Sew Their Lips in Protest
Asylum Seekers Have Sewn Their Lips To Protest Against A Melbourne Detention Center
Three young refugees have reportedly sewn their lips shut in hopes to voice their protest at a Melbourne detention center, says a group for refugees.
The Sky News is reporting that the young asylum seekers are three unaccompanied minors, all boys from Kuwait, Iran and Iraq.
The Refugee Action Collective spokesperson, Daniella Olea emphasized that the refugees need attention and not the same desperation and trauma that they experienced back home - - the same situation that could get worsened in the horrible situation they have been in.
"They are desperate and need immediate medical care and support," collective spokeswoman Daniella Olea was quoted as saying by The Herald Sun. "This news of self-mutilation was very hard to see and hear."
And this is their desperate move to speak and be heard.
"They are already traumatised and we are destroying them even more by locking them up indefinitely without knowing when they will be released," Olea added.
The collective said, according to The Herald Sun that the refugees have been under the custody of the Broadmeadows Detention Center for eleven months.
The young refugees have reportedly sought a medical doctor to have their stitches removed Tuesday.
