The launch of the sex drive-in concept in Zurich, Switzerland, gained a lot of attention online, but surprisingly, it did not get as much customers as it is expected to have. Could it be that the ones who are against it overpowered the ones who support it?

There were a total of nine 'sex boxes' which were kept secret behind a fence made available for the prostitutes and other potential clients. However, on the first night of the launch, there were just a handful of workers who showed up, and this went the same for the customers.

Media people were everywhere near the place to get an initial account of the sex drive-in boxes' first day, but after just an hour, the sex workers only went up to four, all of whom refused to have their interviews taken.

The sex drive-in can welcome 50 prostitutes and open from 7 pm to 5 am. It is one of the three venues where prostitution is legal in the country.

Features of Colourful Sex Drive-in Boxes

The drive-in has its own rules to be followed. All clients who will get the service should be 18 years old and above and condoms used should be disposed properly in the nearby bins. Each of the boxes comes with an alarm so as to offer protection and safety to prostitutes.

The drive-in sex boxes were modelled after the sex brothels in Germany and the Netherlands as well. In Switzerland, the sex workers must be at least 16 years old, which they believe is the proper age to explore one's sexual maturity. According to Michael Herzig from the social welfare department of Zurich, the sex drive-ins were made to offer security to the workers.

Various Opinions

Mr Herzig emphasised that if the problem of human trafficking can't be totally stopped, then at least such strategies like the sex drive-in concept can reduce the harm and violence most prostitutes suffer from. There are no CCTV cameras in the boxes, so that it won't make the business so threatening.

However, for a few politicians like Sven Oliver Dogwiler of the Swiss People's Party, the Zurich sex drive-in project won't work. He stated possible reasons that the clients will feel hesitant to come or the sex workers will not feel comfortable with the new venue.
