'13 Reasons Why' season 2: Author hints at another season
Fans have been clamouring for “13 Reasons Why” season 2. The author of the book in which the show was based on has some good news.
Jay Asher, author of the bestselling young adult novel with the same title, admitted he is not closing doors for a possible second season of the TV adaptation. Asher hinted that he has no problem writing a continuation of the story.
The novel is about high school student Hannah Baker, who committed suicide and leaves behind 13 tapes. Each of the tapes is then sent to 13 people who contributed to her death. The lead role was played by Australian actress Katherine Langford.
In the final episode, Clay (Dylan Minnette) listens to all of Hannah's tapes and finds out the 13 reasons she killed herself. It was also revealed that there is another tape in which Bryce (Justin Prentice) confesses that he raped Hannah.
Clay also confronts Mr. Porter (Derek Luke) for not believing that Hannah was suicidal. Clay gives the tapes to Mr. Porter, who himself is the subject of the 13th tape. Another set is given to Hannah's parents (Kate Walsh and Brian D'Arcy James).
The Netflix original show was released almost two weeks ago, but several questions remain unanswered. Will Bryce and the others involved in Hannah’s death face any repercussion? Is Tyler (Devin Druid) planning a bloody revenge? Does Alex (Miles Heizer) survive his suicide attempt?
The streaming giant has yet to announce whether or not there will be another season. Asher, however, would like a continuation of all the characters’ stories.
"I'm curious as well. What happens to Clay? How do people react to what Alex did at the very end? What's going to happen to Mr. Porter? I'd thought of a sequel at some point. I'd brainstormed it, but decided I wasn't going to write it. So I'd love to see it," Asher told Entertainment Weekly.
Asher can’t confirm if there will be a season 2 but said it is possible since some characters’ storylines were open-ended. He explained the reason behind the final episode. In his book's original ending, Hannah survives the suicide attempt. “Things weren’t left open in the hopes of a sequel… Every action we have is going to have repercussions in ways we could not anticipate. You realise that with not just what Hannah did, but also how other people treated Tyler throughout it. It’s the whole message of the book. Of course, there’s obviously ways to go with a second season if they do that.”
The Selena Gomez-produced drama continues to gain steam among viewers. It also broke Twitter records when it reached 3.4 million tweets after the worldwide release on March 31. “13 Reasons Why” is available on Netflix Australia.
