2 strips of daily bacon boosts chances of stomach cancer by 18%
The list of the negative effects of eating bacon regularly, on top of colon cancer and male infertility, has just expanded. A new study claims daily ingestion of the favourite breakfast fare of two strips increases chances of non-cardia stomach cancer by 18 percent.
The study by the World Cancer Research Fund International (WCRFI), published in April, backs the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) warning in October 2015 that processed meats could cause cancer. Besides pinpointing a specific amount of bacon bad for the health – at 50 grammes per day - the research also warns that drinking 45 grammes of alcohol daily is also a stomach cancer booster.
Besides bacon, other processed meats are also included in the list of stomach cancer boosters. Also on the list are foods preserved by salting as well as being overweight or obese at 23 percent for every 5 body mass index units.
Cardia stomach cancer is found on top of the stomach and is more common in high-income countries. Non-cardia stomach cancer, more common in Asia and linked with H.pylori infection, affects the rest of the stomach, explains WCRFI.
The WCRFI based its warning on 89 studies from around the world and 77,000 cases of stomach cancer. While not recommending a ban on bacon, sausages, ham and similar food, the study suggest avoiding processed meat and alcohol, and maintaining a healthy weight.
In January 2012, ahead of the WHO study, the WCRFI also linked eating two strips of bacon with a 19 percent higher chances of acquiring pancreatic cancer, reports CBS. Their previous research was based on 11 studies and case reports on over 6,000 pancreatic cancer patients.
Notwithstanding these warnings, bacon sales remain healthy, says Nick Schweitzer, brand manager of Hormel Black Label Bacon, reports CBS. Meanwhile, Time reported on June 3 that it was looking for a bacon critic for its Extra Crispy website, operated by People and Sports Illustrated.
On Friday, Pizza Hut announced that it has introduced bacon stuffed crust in UK, reports Walesonline, after the pizza chain offered it in the US. But it is a “secret menu open,” diners must say the words “Bacon Crust Have” to their server when ordering a large pizza.
