2015 Credit Suisse Sports Awards: Stan Wawrinka named Swiss Sportsman of the Year
Two-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka has been named Swiss Sportsman of the Year at the Credit Suisse Sports Awards 2015 broadcasted on Sunday evening. Wawrinka is only the third tennis player to have been voted to win the accolade after Manuela Maleeva (1993) and Roger Federer (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2012 and 2014).
Wawrinka polled most of the votes getting 38.91 percent, while his rival and co-Davis Cup teammate Federer received 22.81 percent of the votes. The third place reportedly went to skier Nino Schurter with 14.34 percent.
The current World No. 4, who won his second Grand Slam trophy this year after beating Novak Djokovic in the finals of the 2015 French Open, was happy with the recognition and shared a snap of him with his new trophy on his official Facebook page.
Wawrinka finished the season with a 55-18 win-loss record. In addition to his French Open title, the 30-year-old Lausanne native also won titles at the Aircel Chennai Open 2015 (def. Aljaz Bedene 6-3 6-4), ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament (def. Tomas Berdych 4-6 6-3 6-4), and Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships 2015 (def. Benoit Paire 6-2 6-4).
