UFC News: Jose Aldo won't get rematch with Conor McGregor, says Dana White
UFC president Dana White is plotting another big fight for Conor McGregor, but it will not be a rematch against Jose Aldo.
White revealed in an interview with Megan Olivi after UFC 194 about his next plans for McGregor. White disclosed about the Irishman’s possible move to face Edgar in the lightweight division, but was adamant that Aldo would not “face someone else.”
“If he vacated and went to [155], it’d probably be Frankie Edgar vs. José for the title,” White said. “If not, then we do Frankie Edgar, and José Aldo would fight somebody else.”
Edgar defeated Chad Mendes at The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale via first-round knockout and likely earn himself a featherweight title shot. However, Aldo, who was regarded as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC having been undefeated for a decade prior to his knockout loss, said a rematch is needed as the match “was not really a fight,” reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
McGregor only needed 13 seconds to dethrone longtime featherweight champ Jose Aldo and unify the featherweight title belts in Las Vegas on Saturday (Sunday AEDT).
The “Notorious” came out quickly and connected with a straight left, which caught Aldo precisely on the chin, putting “Junior” out cold on the canvas. It was the fastest finish in a championship fight in UFC history, beating Ronda Rousey’s 14-second win over Cat Zingano at UFC 184.
Meanwhile, Aldo-McGregor has recorded a whopping $10.1 million gate, the second biggest in UFC history. The Dubliner said the “sky is the limit” for him in drawing massive PPV figures, and plans to exceed boxing’s superfight sale between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao in May.
“I'm bringing in these half a billion dollar revenues, like the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight has done,” McGregor told Bloody Elbow. "At 27 years of age, with every record in the book, with weight divisions above, ready for me to go at, super-fights left and right. Tell me one other champion who has been like that,"
