2015 Western & Southern Open: Tomic, Kokkinakis fall in the second round

Australians Bernard Tomic and Thanasi Kokkinakis both failed to advance in the 2015 Western & Southern Open. Tomic and Kokkinakis lost their respective second round matches in Cincinnati on Tuesday (AEST).

Tomic, Australia’s top-ranked player and World No. 24, was blown away in straight sets 6-4 6-1 by qualifier Alexander Dolgopolov in the second round on Tuesday. The 66^th-ranked Ukrainian has extended his head-to-head series over Tomic 6-3. It was their fourth meeting in an Association of Tennis Professionals Masters 1000 event and the fourth time that the 22-year-old Australian had lost against Dolgopolov in a 1000 event.

The second round match was the second time that Tomic and Dolgopolov had clashed this season. Their first encounter also took place in a hard court tournament in Memphis, where Tomic won 6-1 7-5.

In other matches, Australian wildcard Kokkinakis, who recently became the subject of a controversial remark made by Kyrgios to Stan Wawrinka at Rogers Cup in Montreal, failed to come through after he was dumped in straight sets by number 12 seed Wimbledon semifinalist Richard Gasquet 7-6 6-2. It was the first time that the pair had met on tour. Gasquet previously defeated Canberra native Nick Kyrgios in the first round 6-2 6-1.
