3-year-old Girl Drowns, Babysitter Busy Browsing on Facebook
A 3-year-old girl identified as Kanyce Giddings tragically died from drowning last June 22 while babysitter Kariasa Thomas was busy browsing the social networking site Facebook on her handset. The 37-year-old Dallas woman was arrested on Saturday, August 3, and officially charged with the death of the child.
According to the ABC News 13 Texas report, Kariasa Thomas stated to the police that she was babysitting four kids and a dog in a Dallas apartment complex swimming pool as a favor to her best friend, who turns out to be the mother of Kanyce Giddings. The babysitter went to the already closed swimming pool at about 7 p.m. with the children aged less than 7 years old, her legally blind husband and 16-year-old daughter.
Even though the area was closed, the group still stayed because of the other people taking a good night swim. The police documents reveal that Kariasa Thomas allowed 3-year-old Kanyce Giddings to only play with her feet in the water and not go for a swim since she does not know how to.
The police further revealed that the babysitter was a couple of feet away from the little girl when she drowned. Ms Thomas admitted to the officers that she was busy browsing Facebook on her phone for approximately 15 minutes and even played with the dog instead of really looking after the children.
An unidentified off-duty officer, who resides at the apartment complex, reminded the visitors that the swimming pool is closed. The babysitter started to gather the children until she noticed that little Kanyce was missing.
Kariasa Thomas discovered Kanyce's lifeless body in the pool after asking the off-duty officer for a flashlight. The investigators revealed that the off-duty officer tried CPR on the little girl but unfortunately, she was declared dead at the Methodist Charlton Medical Center.
The babysitter is facing the charge of reckless injury to a child which is a second-degree felony in Texas. Kariasa Thomas is currently being held in the Dallas County, Texas jail with a bail set at $25,000.
