For pre-orders online before June 29, Optus will deliver the phones by July 4.
The Optimus 3D uses Parallax Barrier Technology that allows for the creation of three-dimensional visuals that can be viewed by the naked eye. Capturing 3D in photos and movies is made possible with two 5-megapixel cameras on the back of the phone.
The Optimus 3D's specifications include a dual-core and dual-channel 1 Gigahertz processor, 8GB of internal memory, 32 GB additional external stoarage with a microSD card, a 4.3 inch WVGA screen, and HDMI and DLNA connectivity with micro HDMI and micro USB2 ports. The phone weighs 168 g.
Users can easily switch between 2D and 3D when viewing videos or shooting images. 3D resolution is 720p for recording and playback. Recording and playback is full HD at 1080p for 2D
The Optimus 3D will run Google Inc.'s Android 2.2 Froyo operating system. The operating system can be upgreadable to 2.3 Gingerbread via software update.
LG is bundling the Optimus 3D with ten free 3D games.
LG boasts that the phone has many firsts -- it'll be the first to have a dual-core, dual-channel and dual-memory architecture and be capable of recording, viewing and sharing 3D content.
LG said the 3D smartphone showcases "amazing speed and power made possible with [its] unique "tri-dual" configuration - dual-core, dual-channel and dual-memory. This configuration enables significantly improved performance and run-time compared to other smartphones offering a current 1GHz dual-core processor."
Aside from that, the LG Optimus 3D claims to deliver the world's first 3D smartphone experience and introduces for the first time innovative 'Tri-Dual' hardware architecture. The LG Optimus promises to deliver a groundbreaking visual experience and including Dual-Core, Dual-Channel and Dual-Memory hardware the Optimus 3D provides amazing and smooth graphics rendering and increased processor performance.
"Backed by a combination of superb performance and a complete 3D experience, we're excited about the prospects of the LG Optimus 3D taking the smartphone to a much higher level," LG's Nathan Dunn, General Manager for Mobile Communications (Australia) said in a statement today. "First and foremost, this is a powerful smartphone which has a tremendously well rounded feature set and huge appeal. The Optus Open Network will be the perfect partner for customers looking to get the most out of their mobile experience."
While the "firsts" would always make LG proud, this means that the technology being used is in its infancy. More like using the beta version of a new e-mail service or any software where early adopters end up having to inform the manufacturer of any glitch.Possible problems of the 3D system include blurring when being viewed at the wrong angle or when being exposed to sunlight. And at this stage, there will likely be very few apps and games that would cater to the 3D system. Although Rovio has revealed it is developing a 3D version of the Angry Birds, like most of the 3D apps they're still in "development" status.
Handling multiple applications though appears to be not a problem for the Optimus 3D. It has 1 GHz processor and is based on the already reliable Android 2.2 Froyo.
