Considering the lack of killer new IPs, rampant remakes and HD remasters is one common trend that's evident in this generation of consoles. It's par for the course for videogame developers to bring existing PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 games over to the PS4 and Xbox One in full 1080p glory. "Abyss Odyssey" is one such game that will be coming to the PS4 with updated visuals and a whole smorgasbord of neat little additions.

The original game was a unique take on side-scrolling action game that embedded the depth and speed of fighting game mechanics and infused the heady cocktail with roguelike elements. The roguelike part comes from the game requiring players to raid dungeons that are procedurally generated. That means; each playthrough is unique as the levels are randomly generated. The permanent death aspect of roguelikes is somewhat retained by replacing the dead character with a weaker version who's given a chance to revive the fallen predecessor.

Dubbed as the "Extended Dream Edition," the enhanced PS4 version of "Abyss Odyssey" spruces up the multiplayer component with two oft requested modes. These include a two-player online PVP mode and a four-player local competitive mode. Both these modes were available on the PC version but were excluded from the PS3 and Xbox 360 ports, according to Eurogamer.

The game is developed by ACE Team, which is known better for hits such as the "Zeno Clash" series and "Rock of Ages." The former shows its influence in the " Extended Dream Edition" with the inclusion of the hulking Golem from "Zeno Clash 2" as a playable character. Furthermore, the enhanced PS4 edition will benefit from tweaked game balance to improve the overall gameplay experience.

Also included are new enemies. Destructoid reports that this includes never-seen-before bosses such as Tirana (mini-boss), White Phantom, and Warlock Titan. This is icing on an already well-baked cake because the PS4 version hosts a new procedurally-generated dungeon with a dynamic boss that changes in response to the community efforts. In other words, the boss dramatically changes once enough players have beaten the existing one.

In addition to 1080p visuals, the "Abyss Odyssey: Extended Dream Edition" also beings in a host of improvements to the core gameplay. The PS4 version gets an improved core fighting engine that now incorporates advanced dodge-cancelling move. This is a favourite with veterans on competitive fighting games such as "Street Fighter" that allows skilful players to perform advanced move combinations. The revamped edition has no specific release date, but it is expected to arrive soon in Europe and North America for $15.
