Ahmed Mohamed gets invites from White House, Facebook and Google for homemade clock project
Fourteen-year-old Ahmed Mohamed from Irving, Texas got invites from Facebook, the White House and Google after being arrested by police for bringing a homemade digital clock to his school on Monday. The aspiring engineer freshman showed his invention to his teacher, who thought he had made a bomb.
Ahmed told News 8 reporters the police cuffed him for the crime of building a hoax bomb. In the cop’s defense, Chief Larry Boyd said the boy should have gone beyond describing the thing as a clock so police didn’t misinterpret the device as a fake bomb, reported CNN .
On Wednesday, the police announced the teenager won’t be charged. Ahmed, however, will be suspended from school for three days as mandated by the school principal.
Anger at Ahmed’s arrest flooded social media as netizens from all over the globe posted their reactions to the incident. Many claimed the arrest was a case of racial discrimination, pointing out that Ahmed’s being Muslim played a big part in the arrest.
The hashtag #IStandWithAhmed trended globally on Twitter with more than 100,000 tweets Tuesday morning. This worldwide popularity inevitably got the attention of celebrities, including Facebook, Google and even the White House.
Google tweeted Ahmed to bring his clock to its upcoming science fair this weekend. On the other hand, Twitter offered the boy an internship. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg praised and defended the boy in a post on his Facebook page.
"Ahmed, if you ever want to come by Facebook, I'd love to meet you,” wrote Zuckerberg. He dubbed Ahmed’s clock cool and deserving of applause.
In his Twitter account, President Obama invited Ahmed to the White House. Obama also requested the boy to join him and other scientists at the White House’s Annual Astronomy Night next month.
The teen’s father, Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed, who ran twice for the presidency in Sudan, was upset because the school didn’t make an effort to tell him about the incident right away. During custodial investigation, the boy allegedly answered interrogations without a lawyer. In the meantime, the teen's defenders continue to slam the school and police.
