'Aladdin' live-action feature film adaptation might be an action-filled comedy movie
Another Disney classic will experience a live-action film adaptation that promises to bring a whole new world in its remake. This particular film is none other than the classic Disney animated film, “Aladdin.”
“Aladdin” (1992) has been such an iconic movie that it received several awards and nominations. These awards include the Academy Awards for best original music ("A Whole New World") and the Golden Globes for best original score and best original song.
Due to its success, it is only fitting that a live-action film is made to showcase the film’s musicality and stunning visual displays. The upcoming movie adaptation will be directed by Guy Ritchie, who is known for directing crime films. Ritchie is well-known for his works, including “Sherlock Holmes” and “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” Ritchie's style is that of a stylised, period-centric “bro” adventure, per the Hollywood Reporter.
Helping Ritchie along with the project is screenwriter John August. August specialises in action-comedy and computer-generated animation movies. Some of his works include “Frankenweiner,” “Charlie’s Angels,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Corpse Bride.”
August reportedly will be using majority of the original music and songs from the first “Aladdin.” But the scriptwriter might not have a “non-traditional” take on the story since the original movie does not fall under Ritchie’s style.
With a fresh new take on how the film will be made, viewers would get to experience the movie from a different perspective thanks to Ritchie. But as of now, little is known as to how Ritchie and August will visualise the movie remake.
The casting call
On March 9, Dani Fernandez, a stand-up comedian, podcaster and writer, posted a photo of a casting call on her official Twitter account. The casting call stated that the filmmakers are looking for people ages 18-25, who are fit for the roles of Aladdin and Jasmine. (See post at the bottom of the article.) The actors must also be able to sing and dance. This confirms that the upcoming movie will be filled with musical and dance numbers just like the original Disney film from the '90s.
The casting call also revealed that rehearsals for the movie take place from April 2017. Filming begins on July and ends on Jan. 2018. The casting promotes no "white-washing" of lead characters. The team will strictly cast actors based on the characters' Middle Eastern heritage.
There is no further news about the casting of the “Aladdin” remake or when it will be shown in cinemas. The casting of Genie, originally voiced by the late Robin Williams, has not been finalised yet.
