The 2013 American Music Awards (AMA) has kicked off at the Los Angeles promising a night full of stars, performances and honoring the exceptional artists for the past year.

The fans will be witnessing the performances from One Direction, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and many more. The AMA will be hosted by Pitbull and K$sha. Rihanna was honored with the special AMA Icon Award for her iconic achievements in her career. Artist Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are leading contenders for this year's American Music Awards 2013 with six nominations. Country Singer Taylor Swift and Pop Star Justin Timberlake follow next with five nominations each at the biggest awards of this year.

Florida Georgia Line, Rihanna, and Robin Thicke have each been nominated in four categories for the awards. So who won and who lost at the AMA's this year. Let's find out.

The prestigious Icon Award was decided by the jury earlier and the winner of this award was Rihanna. The New Artist of the Year award was swept by Ariana Grande, who defeated Florida Georgia Line, Imagine Dragons, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Phillip Phillips for the covetous title.

The award for the Favorite Male Artist - Pop/Rock was bagged by Justin Timberlake. He defeated Bruno Mars and Robin Thicke taking home the trophy. The award for Favorite Female Artist - Country was taken by none other than Taylor Swift. She was selected from other nominees Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood. Swift also bagged another award for her album, "Red." "Red" won Favorite Album - Country at the AMA.

Artists Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won the Favorite Album - Rap/Hip-Hop for "The Heist" while the award for Favorite Male Artist - Soul/R&B winner was Justin Timberlake. He was pitched against Miguel and Robin Thicke for the same award.

Rihanna not only took home the Icon of the Year Award but also bagged the Favorite Female Artist - Soul/R&B trophy. She was nominated against Ciara and Alicia Keys. The Award for Favorite Artist - Alternative Rock winner was Imagine Dragons. He was nominated against The Lumineers and Mumford & Sons.

Latin artist Marc Anthony took home Favorite Artist - Latin Music Award. He was pitched against Prince Royce and Romeo Santos. There are few awards yet to be handed out. So watch out this space for more updates on the AMA.
