Amir Khan Defeats Devon Alexander Via Unanimous Decision, Wants Floyd Mayweather Jr. Next
Amir Khan is back in discussions as one of welterweight division’s top contenders after dealing American Devon Alexander a beating via a unanimous decision victory on Sunday. The popular British pugilist won via judges’ scores of 119-109, 118-110 and 120-108 in the bout held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
After the decision was announced, Khan called out undefeated American and top pound-for-pound boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a fight in 2015.
"I really believe I've earned my shot against the best boxer in the world and that's Mayweather," Khan said via BBC Sport. "He is the ideal fight for me. It would be a game of chess, but I would be too skilful. I have the skill and movement to beat him. He will not be able to hurt me.”
Khan’s appeal for the big money fight should go up in the air if Mayweather finalises its deal with Manny Pacquiao. In a recent interview, Mayweather has said that he’s now willing to fight the Filipino on May 2, 2015 although the negotiations are still in the early stages between the American’s camp, The Money Team and Pacquiao’s side.
The 28-year-old Khan improved to 30-3-0 (19 KOs) after the victory while Alexander dropped to 26-3-0 (14 KOs). Khan has now won his last four fights since losing on July 7, 2014 to Danny Garcia via a fourth round technical knockout (TKO). “King Khan” has defeated Carlos Molina, Julio Diaz and Luis Collazo his previous three fight’s before Sunday’s win.
"I'm the best boxer and have the quickest hands in the world. I've just turned 28 and I'm getting better and getting quicker,” Khan said in the same post-fight interview. ”I just had to become smarter. I've got the best jab in the business.”
Khan admitted that he was against a tough opponent in Alexander, whom he described as a very skilful guy. However, Khan also added that this was one of his best performances in his career and with the big fights looming ahead he needed to make a statement victory. Khan retained his World Boxing Council (WBC) silver welterweight title with the win.
