Andrew Garfield vs. Tobey Maguire: Who is the Real “Amazing Spider-Man”
The reboot of the film made its debut on Australian theatres yesterday that wowed the audience.
Despite numerous unfavorable reviews from critics and reviewers, the film still came out strong and made a high grossing opening yesterday. The reboot features a new angle of Peter Parker's story. Young actor Andrew Garfield whose work includes "The Social Network" and "Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus" starred as the young spidey in the new film.
After Sony discarded the idea of Spider-Man 4 following the series of Sam Raimi films, the company decided to go with a reboot. Tobey Maguire starred in the original Sony franchise of the film. It is hard not to make some inferences between the two actors.
A lot of comparisons with many aspects of the film have been made. Below is the comparison of the overall performance of the two versions of the masked superhero crawling of New York City.
1. Spider-Man as nobody. Peter Parker is a wallflower in his high school continuously watching in the background. Tobey Maguire perfectly depicted the role of Peter Parker in his human form. We are introduced to Peter when he was running after the school bus and everyone is laughing.
However, Andrew Garfield's representation took a different course as he continuously stood up for those who are bullied. He tried to stop Flash Thompson in beating a nerdy kid. Although he is a nerd as well, he stood up for what is right.
2. Spider-Man as the geek. In the comic series of "The Amazing Spider-Man," Peter is a total geek and is a science genius. He is the superhero who constantly builds new weapons to defeat his foes as most of his foes are scientists or products of failed science experiments. Sam Raimi failed in this part when he did not put Peter's intelligence on display.
Andrew Garfield's portrayal is accurate evident when he was working on his web shooter and being able to understand his father's work on decay rate formula.
3. Spider-Man as the superhero. Tobey Maguire's performance as the superhero is very well made and polished. In the series, Peter started to question his role as being the hero. A dilemma faced by some of the superheroes. Moreover, the fight scenes in Raimi's work are believable and well done.
The reboot's peg on being a superhero is quite shallow compared to Raimi's films. In the movie, Peter felt guilty for the death of his Uncle Ben and cannot overcome his desire for revenge.
4. Spider-Man with the funny bone. We both see the two Spider-Man crack a few jokes here and there. However, Andrew Garfield made the crowd howl with laughter especially the car thief scene by insulting the thief in dressing like a thief.
5. Spider-Man as lover boy. Spider-Man also has love interests. Although Tobey Maguire and Kristen Dunst have chemistry on screen and their heartbreaking break-up and coming back together wooed many, the chemistry of lovers Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone is undeniable.
In the end, Andrew Garfield made him a worthy successor of the mask and the series. "The Amazing Spider-Man" is now showing in Australian theatres.
