Annual August Perseid meteor shower is one of all-time favourite meteor showers of the year and this major shower event takes place during the lazy, hazy days of summer when families are on vacation. Before you go to the event, know the meteor shower viewing tips to fully enjoy the spectacular display.

1. Dark Sky

One of the most important things to become an expert at watching meteor showers is to get a "dark sky." Seeing a meteor or two is possible from the suburbs but experienced and true viewers go to areas with less city lights to see several meteors each minute.

2. Be Aware of your Dates and Times

Determine the right date at the right time of night. Meteor showers may occur over a range of dates, affected by the Earth's own movement and revolution in space. As Earth orbits around the Sun, "meteor streams" crosses our path. These streams are icy particles coming from comets which move in around the sun's orbit. Moonlight and city lights can obscure them but if you are lucking, you see them falling and vaporising as meteors.

3. Going to the Best Spot

Once you get adapted with a "dark sky", check out the best place to spot meteor showers. There are many places where you can watch comfortably such as rural backyard or deck, hood of your car or at the side of a road. State and national parks are also great choices but be sure that these places have a wide open viewing area similar to a field.

4. Stuffs you Might Want to Bring

Meteor showers don't require special equipments to watch them but you may want to have a better experience by bringing some stuff with you. Consider a blanket, a reclining lawn chair, thermos for hot drink, binoculars for closer look and warm dress to avoid the cold temperature.

5. Relying on Predictions

Meteor showers are very unpredictable and even science cannot even successful predict an exact date. Try going out at times during the night and spend at least an hour looking up in the sky. Showers also happen in several nights and could span in many dates. Hunting for meteor showers is similar to fishing which requires some knowledge and luck to catch something.
