Apple Maps vs. Google Maps: Flaws You Need To Know
Google Maps application is again available in Apple's iPhone devices. Users may now feel a little bit relieved, but they should still be cautious on the possibility of experiencing an application mishap.
Apple's venture into the mobile mapping service has been comparatively unsuccessful. The Apple Maps was introduced in September 2012 as part of its mobile operating system upgrade to iOS 6 but several reports of flaws surfaced.
Some of the biggest and possibly life-threatening mistakes of the Apple Maps are showing incorrect addresses of locations, mixing-up establishment labels and odd 3D-depictions of landmarks. Police in the city of Mildura, Victoria are warning the travelers to be careful when using the iOS 6 service in the area.
The application incorrectly located Mildura in the middle of Murray Sunset National Park which stranded numerous travelers in the Australian Outback.
According to the Victoria Police, some people were trapped for as long as 24 hours without food and water before obtaining phone reception in the unsafe terrain. The Victoria Police already sent an e-mail to Apple requesting for the flaw to be fixed in order to avoid life-threatening situation for travelers.
The latest Google Map application offers new features and noteworthy re-designed interface. However, there are still a couple of drawbacks.
The new design can make the most of iPhone 5's extra screen as real estate. At the pop-across menu, users can obtain traffic information, satellite images and public transport details along with the capacity to launch the Google Earth application and zoom in on the same location searched in Google Maps.
Upon clicking public transport, it shows the "Information is not available for this region" message. Access to the transport map-reading will give you instructions how to get from one point to another through public transportation instead of driving or walking which also depends on your residence location.
Another drawback is that Google Maps can no longer be the default mapping application. It is also not possible to save a Google Maps search location as a contact on your iPhone. The chances of fixing these flaws depend on Apple's limitations on how the applications act together. Apparently, it is a more sensitive issue now that Google has regained control on Apple's iPhone.
