Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger knew that Jose Mourinho's return to the English Premier League was imminent because of the circumstances, which seemed to be perfectly plotted for the latter to make a comeback.

The Portuguese mentor has led Chelsea to win five major trophies during his first stint at Stamford Bridge before he was sacked because of failing to achieve Champions League objectives.

"It was not a big surprise [that Mourinho returned] because there was talk about it many times," Wenger told arsenal.com.

"When he left Madrid, it looked to be one of his best opportunities to come back."

"What the Premier League wants first is the quality of the games and his teams give you always a tough game. That is what you want."

Mourinho is known for his off-game antics directed against other managers or players, and Wenger is no stranger because he has had a first-hand experience of Jose's tirade.

"I think he is one of these people who is a voyeur. He likes to watch other people. There are some guys who, when they are at home, have a big telescope to see what happens in other families. He speaks, speaks, speaks about Chelsea. I don't know if he wants my job. He loves Chelsea." Mourinho said of Wenger.

Wenger, who was contemplating on taking legal actions, countered with: "When you give success to stupid people, it makes them more stupid sometimes."

Nevertheless, the Gunners boss played down talks surrounding past controversies between them.

"With all competitors there are ups and downs," said Wenger.

"You could see that again yesterday between [Manuel] Pellegrini and Mourinho, because we put our whole heart into every single game."

"Sometimes we go overboard and that is part of the job. With the distance after, it always settles."
